LD Characteristics

In the following video, Katherine Barratt talks about four major characteristics to be aware of when dealing with a brain-based learning disability. If you have not done so already, this would be a great time to download the Reflection Guide and take notes as you listen.

Reflection 3:  List the four major characteristics you just learned about. In what ways have you observed students experiencing difficulty with some of these?

Reflection 4:  Focus on one student you remember having some of these difficulties. Please describe how you helped this student.

Classroom Considerations

Now that we are aware of these four considerations, how should this impact our classroom teaching?  As you watch the following video, take notes on the specific strategies that are mentioned that will help LD and ADD students in their learning.

Reflection 5:  Please describe at least two strategies mentioned in the video that you think would be the most useful in your classroom.

Cognitive and Self-belief Systems

Over time, our experience and maturity cause our students to develop two critical aspects.  Our students enter class with a sense of how they think and act (cognitive belief) and a sense of who they are (self-belief).  

The cognitive belief system reflects the physical nature of the brain, and it is known as our world view.  It contains our learned knowledge, experiences, and beliefs about our environment.  It is the brain formation associated with the mental tasks of comprehending, reasoning and thinking.

The second system, our self-belief system, reflects what we think about ourselves and is also known as our self concept.  It determines how we feel about our appearance, personality, and academic skills.  And no doubt you may already know just how much of an impact a students self-belief system can have on their learning!

Why are these two systems important to our teaching?  The knowledge your students bring to class as well as how they view themselves may vary greatly depending on the kind of school, work and general life experiences each one has experienced.  This kind of information gives us insight into students personal makeup and can provide an invaluable reference base.

Please view the next video which describes how the cognitive and self-belief systems affect a persons personal and world view.  You will have a chance to record what you think are the key points of both in your reflection guide.

Reflection 7:  Read the following two student comments: This finally makes sense to me.  Im afraid Im going to hold the whole class up. What do these two student comments show us about the power and influence of ones self-belief system? In your answer, refer to a personal experience.
